David Avery papers, 1771-1817.

Contains the diaries and sermon notes of David Avery, originally of Norwich, Connecticut. The diaries were primarily written while Avery was chaplain of the 15th Continental Infantry. Avery marched at the Lexington Alarm and was at the Battle of Bunker Hill and was in the expedition that crossed the Delaware and attacked Trenton. His diaries make frequent references to the Revolutionary War as well as his sermons. Prior to the war, Avery prepared for Yale at Eleazar Wheelock's school in Lebanon, Connecticut. Diaries also reference Avery's work as a missionary to the Indians, specifically the Oneida in New York. Also includes a few of his papers, including a poem attributed to him and written shortly before his death titled "Farewell to Time." Contains transcriptions of some of the diaries in the CHS collection as well as transcriptions of selected diaries from the collections of the Princeton Theological Seminary.

The Regiment was organized in spring, 1777, at Boston and consisted of eight companies from Worcester, Middlesex, Cumberland, Essex, Berkshire, and Bristol counties. In June 1777, it was assigned the 2nd Mass. Brigade, an element of the Highlands Dept. The Regiment was relieved from the Dept. and assigned to the Northern Dept. on July 4, 1777.
